NEW LIFEBOAT FOR SENNEN COVE

Reporting on the dedication and naming ceremony for RNLB 'City of London III', Clifford Champion reports:

'Peta Walmisley, Anne and I accepted the invitation to the dedication, naming and launch of this boat for which we have laboured for so long.

'It was a day that I shall never forget. The ceremony was held on the beach and was completely and absolutely a British affair. The hymns were accompanied by the local Brass Band including a big drum and was assisted in it's volume by the local Male Voice Choir.

'The boat was on it's launching track, some 30 feet up in the air, forming the perfect backdrop to an English Spring Day. Not hot, but summery with enough wind to keep everybody cool.

'We were rewarded by smiling faces. What better, as we were there to dedicate a boat that would save lives as the previous Sennen Cove lifeboats had done.

'Before the naming ceremony, to be undertaken by Kathy Vlasto, wife of the Chairman of the RNLI London branch and a CLYC member, and the boat and all who would sail in her were blessed - there was not a dry eye to be seen.

'The CLYC can be very proud, for we may only have subscribed a little, as everybody else subscribed a little, towards a total cost fo £2.7 million. Bur if we and they had not done so there would have been no launch that day.'

Peta adds: we hope to continue the link with Sennen Cove forged that day. You can follow news of 'City of London III' through this link.
