BURNHAM REGATTA 2010

The CLYC’s sixth Burnham Regatta was held over the weekend of 25-27 June, when David Marsh, a new member of the Committee, and Carol organised the most successful event to date (and the weather was fantastic too).

Members and their partners were hosted by the Crouch Yacht Club for a buffet supper on the Friday night

The Commodore of the Crouch Yacht Club welcomed us to this new venue.

Chris Slatter, Commodore of the Royal Burnham Yacht Club and his wife, Annie, were Race Officers, supported by the Immediate Past Commodore, on 'Grey Lady', owned and kindly skippered by Peter and Paula Howard
David and Carol had arranged for non-sailors to have a tour of the town in the morning, while the sailors prepared for the racing, which this year was held in the afternoon, allowing for the tide. Eight yachts competed, comprising five brought by members: Black Rose, Sistermatic, oceab Spirit II, Oblivion and Eclipse; and three loaned: Cirrus 2, Strata IV and Selene. For the second year, the Oyster Smack, Black Rose, was the largest and was started half an hour ahead of the others.

A good breeze and a falling tide provided for an enjoyable race. Black Rose passed the line first, followed by Eclipse, Selene, Cirrus II, Ocean Spirit, Strata IV and Sistermatic. The Commodore, Michael Wilkey in Oblivion, retired.

The dinner on the Saturday night took place at the Royal Burnham Yacht Club, with a delicious meal, sung grace led by the Admiral, and the loyal toasts proposed by the Commodore.

The toast to the guests was proposed by Jamie Campbell Houston, partnership manager of Team Origin, who gave a brief history of the America’s Cup, leading up to a description of the UK challenge for 2012. He mentioned that this year there will be a race for the

1851 Cup during Cowes Week; this will be a perennial event organised by Team Origin and the Royal Thames Yacht Club. (See the Team Origin website for more details.)

The reply on behalf of the guests was given by John Crawford, Immediate Past Commodore of The New Zealand Yacht Squadron, during whose tenure New Zealand won and lost the Cup. Clifford Champion presented a cheque to Sir Richard Rycroft, Bt, chairman of the Burnham branch of the RNLI.

The Commodore presented gifts to those who had helped make the weekend a success and announced the winners of the race on handicap, when the trophies were presented, in reverse order. The McMorrough-Kavanagh Cup, presented by Mari McMorrough-Kavanagh for third place, was won by Eclipse; the Sir Robin Gillett Cup for second place, was presented by the Admiral to Selene and the Robert Green Cup, presented by Annette Green to Dennis Taylor, was won by Black Rose.

Roger Burroughs had encouraged members to make donations for Lucy Macgregor, the Olympic candidate who has been adopted by the Club, where the winner of a day’s sailing in Roger's yacht in the Solent with Lucy was won by Perry Wilson of Burnham-on-Crouch. Information about Lucy’s latest racing achievements was presented and can be seen by clicking here.

The full results of the race are given below.
